Mosaics have been created for over 5000 years in materials ranging from stone to clay glass and ceramic tile. Many historical cultures such as the Ancient Romans and the Byzantines used mosaics extensively. During the first centuries of Christianity the Byzantines were the first to use the newly developed material of coloured glass as the primary medium. The recognized the advantages of glass in terms of luminosity, range and richness of colour. The universal appeal of mosaic continues today thanks to its ability to turn small individual pieces into a harmonious work of art without sacrificing their uniqueness.
