2 Bathroom Makeovers
African Print Bathroom
Tools And Materials Needed
- Melamine print
- High adhesive primer 9 (1 hr. dry time)
- Acrylic paint (terra cotta, sand, yellow, chocolate brown)
- Roller tray (regular and mini size)
- Roller (regular and mini size)
- Latex gloves
- Masking tapes
- 1/4" tape
- Rubber stamps
- Artist brush
- Pencil
Getting Started
- Clean the bathroom tiles.
- Prime the tiles using the high adhesive primer designed for shiny surfaces or for tile. Tape around the edges of the tub and use a drop cloth to protect its surface. Remember to wear latex gloves.
- You can also use this paint to cover any wallpaper. We used it to cover a small portion between the ceiling and the top of the shower tiles.
- Allow the paint to dry.
- Base coat the tiles; we used a sand yellow melamine paint and let the paint dry.
- Choose your pattern. We chose tiles at random. Tape off the tile border using 1/4" tape. A terra cotta colour was chosen for the alternating tiles. Use a miniature roller to fill in the squares.
- Allow paint to dry.
- Roll the black melamine paint over the rubber stamp and press onto the terracotta square.
- Roll a fresh coat of paint onto the stamp each time you replicate the pattern.
- The wall paper was base coated in the same sand yellow; a dark mustard was rubbed over the surface. Then the stamping design was incorporated. If you wish to continue the stamping on the wallpaper be sure to pencil in registration marks so the pattern remains horizontal.
- A zig zag design was also painted on the wallpaper; using a chocolate coloured acrylic paint.
- Mark out the area to be zig-zagged and paint with an artist's brush, freehand.
Striped Clawfoot Tub
Tools And Materials Needed
- Latex paint (burgundy & gold)
- Base coat latex paint (vanilla)
- Roller tray
- Roller
- Latex high adhesive primer
- Masking tape
- Varnish
- Paint brush (2")
- Low tack tape
- Pencil
Getting Started
- Prime the outside of the tub.
- Base coat the tub in a latex paint, 2 coats. Allow dry time between each coat. We used a vanilla colour.
- Mark out 3" stripes around your tub in pencil
- Run strips of tape along the inside of the pencil marks. Make sure the stripes remain equal.
- Use a small roller and paint between the taped lines with the desired colour. Our colour of choice was burgundy.
- Build up the paint layers by adding them in thin layers. Take the excess paint off the roller on a piece of paper towel or a rag. This will help to stop leakage under the tape.
- When the paint is completely dry remove the tape.
- Pencil marks can be removed with an eraser and a coat of varnish should be applied to protect the paint.
Stencil-word Walls
Tools And Materials Needed
- Spirit level
- Pencil
- Stencil
- Spray glue
- Sstencil brush
- Low-tack tape
- Latex paint (burgundy)
- Primer
- Mylar
- X-acto knife
- Paper towels/rags
Getting Started
- Cut your stencil letters out of mylar using an x-acto knife.
- In pencil, mark out where the words will be placed.
- Spray glue the stencil letter and press it on the wall, following your previous registration marks.
- By cutting out each letter and stenciling each letter separately, you can reuse the same letters for different words.
- Stencil brush the letters using stencil paint or latex paint.
- Remove the letter and continue stenciling until the words are complete.
Faux Frame Mirror
Tools And Materials Needed
- Gesso (ornamental) or stucco
- Stencil
- Low-tack tape
- Spray glue
- Mylar
- X-acto knife
- Spatula
- Acrylic paint
- 1" brush
- Metallic paint (acrylic)
Getting Started
- Choose your stencil design.
- Measure how your stencil will fit around the mirror
- Cut out the stencil from the mylar with an x-acto knife
- Space out where your stencil will follow around the mirror and mark it with a pencil.
- Spray glue the stencil and press it flat to the wall.
- Using a spatula cover the stencil with the ornamental gesso. Then carefully pull the stencil away from the gesso leaving an embossed pattern. Continue around the mirror until your design is completed. But wash the stencil each time you need to reuse it.
- Allow this to dry for 24 hours.
- Tape around the outside of the design to create an evenly framed border.
- Mix a container of 2 parts paint (burgundy) 1 part glaze. Use a paint brush to paint the taped area.
- Dab the gesso lightly with a soft rag to diminish any brushstrokes. Let dry.
- Highlight the raised pattern with a tiny amount of metallic paint by repositioning the stencil over the embossed area.
- Use an artist's brush and softly sweep over the raised gesso.
- Use a paper towel to lightly rub over the embossed pattern. This will highlight it nicely.
