South Seas Loft
Faux Rust Bathtub
Tools And Materials Needed
- High adhesive Primer
- Spray stencil adhesive
- Old, splayed paintbrush
- Rust-colored latex paint
- Sea sponge
- Black acrylic spray paint
- White, or very pale grey paint
Getting Started
- Prime the exterior of the bathtub with a high-adhesive primer. Let dry overnight.
- Spray stencil adhesive thickly in random spots over the surface. This lumpy, uneven finish will make subsequent coats of rust and black paint look as if real rust is forming naturally on the side. Let the adhesive dry for 15 minutes.
- With a splayed old paintbrush, loosely splatter rust-colored paint over the surface to create a dense texture. While the paint is still wet use a sea sponge to break it up.
- Spray black acrylic paint loosely and randomly to cover any white spots and create "stains" that seem to be coming out of the "rust".
- Using a second sea sponge create clouds in random patches with white paint. This should be subtle and gently applied. Go back over with a bit of black and/or rust if necessary, always softening.
NB - Never paint the inside of the bathtub.
